This fourth of July weekend, record breaking heat hit Southern California. Temperatures had nerve enough to rise well over 100 degrees! I, for one, found that quite offensive, as did my twist out (#naturalhairproblems) but what it really meant is that I needed to find some indoor fun for the kids with AC. Enter, Bitter Root Pottery. This was one of the activities on my summer bucket list and with this crazy hot weather, there was no better time to check out their brand new location at the Westfield Valencia Mall.
Each Saturday and Sunday, Bitter Root Pottery offers kids classes.
Aprons were provided to help keep clean, although I wouldn’t wear your Sunday best for this activity.
The location is beautiful and serene. A perfect environment to foster creativity.
Hand crafted creations filled the studio space.
Our Instructor was named Isabel and she was fantastic.
She took her time explaining the process to the kids…
And she whipped this little number up in a matter of minutes.
The kids got started filled with confidence, because like most anything…in their minds, they already know how to do any and everything like professionals. I’m pretty sure they thought they could snatch up Isabel’s job if they wanted to.
The instructors were super patient and always willing to jump in with tips and encouragement…
The class was went from 11-12:30, and within that time they each produced two awesome handmade creations.
They cleaned up but still left covered in clay.
Their pieces will be glazed in their chosen colors, fired, and a few weeks from now I’ll go pick up their masterpieces. Now, I’ll admit, this activity is a bit pricey at $35 each but we will end up with four works of art, made by their little hands to treasure forever and to me… that’s pretty priceless. Zion stamped “MOM” in his as a gift for me, I meeeeeeaaaan! *insert ugly cry.
Couldn’t have found better refuge from the 112 temperatures plaguing So. Cal. Thanks to everyone at Bitter Root Pottery for giving my kids so much to write about in their grateful journals before bed. We’ll be back for sure!
